Hither and thither — 3/26/09

Surprise! This week's H&T is a day early, because I've something special planned for tomorrow. Special enough to want to avoid either post bumping the other. There! That's all you get. See, this is why you don't want to miss a day at this-'ere blog. And now, for this week's fun, frivolity, "Hmm"ing, and head-slapping:
  • I would think that, at the top of any short-list of thankless tasks, one would find "defending Jar Jar Binks." But this guy tries, anyway.
  • Peeps! Really. I mean it. Peeps. Like you've never seen them... with any luck, that is.
  • Pastor Garry Weaver has a very chucklesome series of "Spot the Impostor" pictures.
  • We've all heard what the MSM wants us to think about those evil thieves at AIG. One of them gives us his perspective — and (surprise!) it's a very different view.
  • Oh and while we're in the neighborhood, don't forget to have your pet fill out his tax return. (H-T Susan.)
  • Somehow, I missed this. Back in January, the Washington Post told us what was out, what was in. Towards the bottom (a valued lurker pointed out), we learn that Warren's Purpose-Driven Life is out, Denis Leary's (profane, offensive) Why We Suck is in. Oy.
  • Need a good screen cleaner? Who doesn't? Here's one. (Thanks to anonymous reader.)
  • Among the (relatively minor) things I'd like to live to see is the unseating of Senator ("Snarlin' ") Arlen Specter in favor of an actual conservative. The clueless pro-abort has failed at several crucial points in our history, and I don't forget. For instance, I don't forget his voting against Judge Robert Bork; I don't forget his citing "Scottish law" and voting "Not proven," for no rationally-defensible reason, when Clinton was impeached. And maybe, just maybe, I'll get my wish.
  • Here is a brief debate on spanking, and whether it's effective. I think a few things. First, I doubt the opponent's claim of "hundreds." Second, I wonder about the correlation/causation issue. That is, if they're saying that kids who were spanked more often turn out to be bad-actors... which the chicken, which the egg? Were they spanked more because they were already bad actors, and did not take to heart the lessons of the spanking? After all, even the best discipline (like the best preaching) is not magic (Proverbs 13:1). Third, pragmatism. Today's study says it doesn't "work," so don't do it. Do we live by studies? Well, if you look at it a certain way, preaching doesn't "work." Witnessing doesn't "work." Loving your spouse doesn't "work." In fact, being a Christian doesn't "work." Unless what motivates you is faith in God's Word, and all-consuming concern for His glory. Then it "works" just fine.
  • Over-contextualization Alert. 'Nuff said.
  • As Obama/Dem Congress/MSM moves more and more into de facto control of American business, I'd be interested to see a good-faith liberal attempt to tell us how it differs from fascism and socialism. Because I don't see the difference in destination.
  • The Heritage Foundation's Conn Carroll shows and details what a financial disaster the Obama budget is and would be. Dwarfing any Bush deficit, the Obama plan would threaten to bankrupt America. Yet the most inexperienced, unqualified, yet arrogant man ever to take the office pushes stubbornly ahead, insisting on such brilliant moves as cutting tax-credits for charitable giving. Brilliant! Not!
  • Apparently not everyone is happy with Notre Dame inviting the most virulently anti-life president ever to speak at its commencement, and be honored (!) with an honorary law degree. Some of the students have spoken out, and spoken strongly: "we wish to express our deepest opposition to Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.’s invitation of President Barack Obama to be the University of Notre Dame’s principal commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. ...Fr. Jenkins has placed some of his students in a moral dilemma as to whether they should attend their own graduation. Many pro-life seniors, along with their families, are conflicted about whether to participate in the commencement ceremony."
  • Our own Carol Jean "Wordled" the recent Obama yak-fest. Part one is what his teleprompter had to say; part two is what Obama said without the muse. See a contrast?
  • Okay, now... THIS is just one of the scariest things I've seen in a while. Not funny, man! Not funny!!
  • I want to shop here:
  • Isn't "honest scammer" a contradiction in terms? Evidently not:

  • Here's one from a dedicated geek:
  • And then there's...

Jar Jar was not the biggest problem with the prequels. My problem with the Star Wars prequels has always been that the characters were just flat. In the original Star Wars, you’re barely half way through the film when Ben Kenobi buys it, and the audience went, “Oh, NO!” In the first prequel, you’re at the end of the film when Qui-Gon Jinn dies, and the audience went, “Cool fight scene.” (/ rant)

Why did the peeps roasting marshmallows make me think of the Donner Party?

That tax form looks familiar

Arlen Specter must go!

I thought one of the most damning comments was the wonderful Mark Steyn's, on movie three. I think Amidala says "I love you, Anakin," and Steyn observes something like, "Lucas must make his characters say things like this because he is incapable of showing us."

Wow.

Oh my! We are in tears (2 teen boys and myself) looking at the Peeps! The one in the....um...thong (can you say that on H & T?) is hilarious! Someone needs to explain the "Dibs" one to us though. We googled it but it took us on a rabbit trail to The Nose Game which we're gonna play at dinner tonight.

I don't remember who said it, but someone discribed the dialogue from the SW prequels as, "Bad dialogue made boring."

...is this thing broken?

Sorry, been out running errands. I don't know where everybody else is...

Re: the Disney does Tolkien thing-

AAAAAAAHHHH!! MY EYES! MY EYES!

And re: Star Wars - my respect for Natalie Portman went up quite a bit. Any actress who could utter the words "Hold me... like you did by the lake on Naboo" without dissolving into giggles or throwing a screaming fit and calling her agent to get her out of her contract is committed.

And President Obama is to evidence as the Magisterium is to infallibility.

DJP said...

Oh my gosh, Rachael, that's our FAVORITE LINE!

IOW, to quote, unlike the Star Wars prequels, one of the greatest movies of all time -

"You kip on usin' dat word. I do not think it mins what you theenk it mins."

The letter from the AIG exec. was sad and embarrassing to read. It strikes at the heart of Capitalism. Last night I read a review of the book Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg. Sounds like a must read!

“Fascism, at its core, is the view that every nook and cranny of society should work together in spiritual union towards the same goals overseen by the state,” writes Goldberg. Sound familiar? Statolatry (worship of the state), the divinization of community and the creation of a civil religion are hardly the stuff of National Review or the Wall Street Journal. These are all distinctly socialist lunacies.

But for Goldberg, “the elephant in the corner that the American left has never been able to admit, explain or comprehend” is that, in one of the book’s standout claims, “Woodrow Wilson was the twentieth century’s first fascist dictator.”

Wilson was “a priest of the cult of expertise”. He was inspired by Bismarck and Prussia’s top-down socialism of eight-hour workdays, health care and social insurance. Under Wilson’s presidency, Goldberg says, America briefly became a fascist country.

You'll learn a lot just by reading the review!

Dan,

You're killing me! H & T on a Thursday??? I have work to do! But briefly...

Star Wars... I can barely make myself watch the three prequels. Maybe if I were an adolescent boy.

And the Disney LOTR, sadly, reminded me of Veggie Tales' "Lord of the Beans".

I haven't watched the spanking clip. I'll probably just get mad. Regarding correlation/causation, YES, in a certain family I happen to know, the most strong-willed defiant child gets more spankings than his brothers. Duh.

So.... what's on deck for tomorrow???

DJP said...

Yes... that is the question, isn't it? What could move me to bump beloved feature H&T to a Thursday?

Hmm....

Rachael Starke said...

Two words - Book. Deal.

DJP said...

Rachael, you kill me. In an eery way.

But no, that's not what I'm talking about here. Or, not talking about.

Shouldn't that be "First Calvidispibaptogelical Church of Sacramento?"

Ohh, I wish! But no.

Well, Dan. If you want to move to Montana...

Of course, we don't have any money to pay you...

But it isn't about the money, right...

I thought Dan was a Presbyterranean?

Stefan Ewing said...

No, he's just infiltrating^H^H^H^H^H^H worshipping at a Presbyterranean church...because, of course, that's the only logical place for a dispensational credobaptist to worship...{brow furrows, knowing he's explained it all before}

DJP said...

Julie, yes and know. I attend a Presbyterranean church, because it has simply been the best preaching and fellowship in the area. But I am a Calvidispiebaptogelical. So, there is a stained glass ceiling, at least as far as holding formal office/position.

Mike Westfall said...

"Presbyterranean."
LOL.

Presbyterranean = "elder under glass"?

In the meta of the article I referenced above, someone referred to the "First United Church of Public Administration" in the UK. Ouch! But I hear they always have openings. Keeps 'em in office.

That is one cool cake!

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Oh, sorry, I remember that now. It's a PCA church, yeah? Our pastor is PCA. Good preaching. Good fellowship. And there's TIME to fellowship because it's not all filled up with a bunch of programs. Or staff. (It's kinda small... and I like that.)

I'm glad there's a place for "Heinz 57" variety Christians :0)

1. Squirrel!!! Yes, that's where I saw the pet tax form first!!! What happened was this: I had forgotten where I had seen it first, but I remember laughing over the form, so later I did a search on it, found it, and emailed the link to Dan so that he may post it if he didn't do so already (yes, my memory is that bad). So sorry, Squirrel. I didn't mean to take credit for your post--I just have an awfully bad memory!! And thank you for the big laughs!! :D

2. My favorite Peeps shots are "Peepzilla" (just look at those adorable little Peeps' expressions in the face of that awful monster Peep!) and "Jiffypeeps". "Peeponardo" the Renaissance artist is also quite funny.

3. And that adorable pug...awwwwww........

4. How about those impostor pictures!? It's like telling a joke with pictures. Picture after picture one chuckles, but then we come to the last picture--ba da bump ROTFL!!

Stefan Ewing said...

Okay, the big Friday post is...

Home to Rome?

You've been imparted with a private revelation?

You're starting a "relevant" band that will contextualize the Gospel via covers of Chicago songs?

Joining a PCUSA church?

Rachael Starke said...

Stefan!!!

Laughing so hard over Chicag-ualization I nearly spat out my penne with sausage and arugula.

But now I've lost my appetite. :)

Susan said...

Didn't really get the Chicago joke, Stefan, but after looking at their album covers, I look forward to seeing Dan doing that tomorrow....

Stefan Ewing said...

Oh, Dan's a big Chicago fan. Not so much of the other stuff, I think.

Rachael: Arugula?

Susan said...

Oh, I know he's a big fan, but I thought you were driving at something else, and I wasn't sure what that was. One thing I did notice about their cover designs though (hence my comment above): Can we say, "Repetitious"? (That certainly saved them a lot of headaches from having to think of a different design for each album [/tongue in cheek].)

DJP said...

Stefan — you're killing me.

(Actually, I did re-write and Gospelize the lyrics to one of their songs, back in the '70s.)

Actually, Squirrel nailed it in a private email. It goes up as soon as I give it the last touches.

Until then, I trust he'll stay shush!

I'm a Star Wars fan and the "prequels" were hard to take. Did Ben Kenobi ever win a fight? I mean the fight at the end of episode one reminded me of a Rocky movie where Rocky gets pummeled for 12 rounds then somehow manages to knockout the opponent just before the bell rings. Most of the good jedi looked weak or pathetic whenever faced with a dark side Jedi of any level. I hated to see Qui-Gon die. He was one of my favorite characters.

About spanking: Who studies this type of issue? And how exactly does one study this? what is the control group? How do you limit outside factors? How do you make sure the spankings are equal among test subjects? How long must you perform the study to obtain results of how these persons turn out? The bottom line is that these people have an agenda. They are statists who want to overthrow the power of parents. Socialism must overthrow religion and parents in order to crush individualism.

Mark Levin's book, "Liberty and Tyranny" just hit shelves. It is a great book with a lot of history related to the founders in it. I highly recommend it. (bought it at the airport this week).

And are pet taxes really so outrageous an idea? Being that we'll have carbon taxes in the U.S. shortly (in one form or another), I think it only appropriate to tax pet owners for the CO2 produced by their pets in addition to the neighborhood "cleanup" costs associated with many animals. In fact, I think I will make a movie about it right after I start a "pet offset" business whereby I sell offset credits to pet owners whereby they can "offset" the environmental impact of their animals.

DJP said...

The bottom line....

Snort

(I think you're right, btw)

Aaron said...

I don't get the snort part...

Tim said...

Dan, do you remember which blog the "honest scammer" screenshot was posted on originally? The link you gave is to Blogger's image dump.

I try not to miss a chance to mock the scammers on my own blog, and this interaction is priceless.

DJP said...

The link I gave is the source. I did a little bit of Googling for you, and didn't find any better.

Tim said...

Dan, I just found the original blog post here.

Even more delicious is the fact that the intended victim was the CEO of the company that publishes anti-phishing software "Online Armor".

DJP said...

Good work, Tim - but a sad story. The scammer brings God into it, says God will forgive him, and it's OK because he prays God will give more money to the people he bilks.

May have to use that someday.
