More ObamAwards?

Hey. Why not?

UPDATE: one more thought —

UPDATE II (perhaps of many): leave it to Mark Steyn to nail the disgraceful vapidity of this award with his customary wit and style. Did you know — as Steyn points out — that the deadline for nominations was February 1? That means that the committee nominated 0 when he had been President for, at most, twelve days. Among many wonderful things, Steyn says this about 0's followers urging him to focus on his healthcare takeover rather than those nasty war-thingies like (the formerly must-win, top-priority) Afghanistan: "Why squander your presidency on trying to turn an economically moribund feudal backwater into a functioning nation state when you can turn a functioning nation state into an economically moribund feudal backwater?"

Dan this is classic! Thanks, friend.

Glenn Beck was riffing on this theme yesterday and awarded himself Astronaut of the Year, Motor Trend Car of the Year, 2010 Valedictorian of Cambridge (and Harvard!), etc.

The last vestiges of honor associated with the Nobel Peace Prize will be gone after this one.

Gosh...I thought the vestiges took flight with Jimmy Carter's win in 2002. Or was it Arafat in 1994?

Or AlGore.

Nobel Nolonger means anything. It is like those who would pass a child along, whether he has done the work or not, just so he can feel good about himself and not get discouraged. Agendas all around.

It's only the result of a logical progression of the wonderful self-esteem movement.

That cartoon is brutal....

(Just wanted to say that first. Will read Steyn's article later and see if it can get any worse....)

Yes, I knew about this. The vote probably occurred mid-February or something.

I for one am glad that President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. It solidified the fact that the Nobel Peace Prize Committee is meaningless and irrelevant. He is the laughing stock of the world. Even some liberals thought the award was ludicrous.

...and didn't he win it pretty much exactly as he won the Presidency — though without (as far as I know) campaigning.

You're all laughing now, if ruefully. But I know how I could make you mad.

I could list out the people who were passed over so that 0 could receive the award.

The vid is funny, but then I read the article and chortling became dry heaving. Consider one of the final paragraphs: (I paraphrase) If Obama vassilates in Afghanistan and the Taliban regains control, the morale boost this gives the would-be young terrorists will be staggering. The sum-game being anything but peace. A President who acheives perhaps a more volatile extreme Musim hatred of the United States is being rewarded with a Peace Prize by a European panel. The irony is bitter.

Irony alert - a person who is ridiculously unqualified for the Nobel Peace Prize, wins it, and doesn't have the decency to decline it, rendering the award meaningless,

while other persons who thoroughly did qualify for it, don't win it, further rendering the award meaningless,

so that next year, if someone who is qualified for it wins it, they might be justified in declining the award, because it's become essentially meaningless.

Or worse than meaningless - given that it's recently been given to people like Jimmy Carter, Algore, and Yasser Arafat.

Totally agree, Rachael, especially regarding Arafat. The committee members must have been doping when they voted for him!!

Nope. I'm laughing all the way to the bank. Yes, I realize Reagan got passed up even after he help liberated hundreds of millions of Europeans. President George W. Bush liberated 50 million Arabs and I realized he got passed up also.

But I'm laughing because the Nobel Peace Prize is a complete joke. Nobel's original intention for the peace prize was to give it to people that pursued the elimination of standing armies. What does that tell you?

The Nobel Peace Committee did make a couple of good choices like giving it to Walesa and Kissinger. But for the most part, they are a joke.

I would say that Nobel must be turning over in his grave, but that would be an understatement -- he must be spinning! What a meanless joke his award has become! Thus go the awards and acolades of men.

Over at my place, I made the observation that the current Nobel Committee loves lefties, and all that Obama is really accomplishing thus far is the destruction of the country.

Maybe that's why he won the award.

Or Sadat (shared with Begin) in '78, or Amnesty International in '77.

Of course, you have the chorus of voices saying, in so many words, "Why should he do that? Who turns down the Nobel Peace Prize?" Well, Le Duc Tho did, precisely because he did not [prepare to be shocked] consider himself deserving.
