Hither and thither 1/16/09

It's been awhile, so... here we go:
  • Darn well time somebody did "this"!
  • So you, like me, get inundated with these "Dear One In Christ"-type spams, telling you of this great inheritance you have, contact immediately, blah blah blah. And you think "Yeah, right. Who falls for this?" Sadly, now we know who falls for it: this guy.
  • For fairly obvious reasons (unless there's no media access under your rock), President-elect Barack Obama has been named "Gun Salesman of the Year" by The Outdoor Wire. Why? "It's credit where credit is due. Mr. Obama has consistently voted against individual rights to firearms, appointed a re-tread Clinton administration full of gun banners, and made it plain to anti-gun groups that despite what he might say to the contrary, he's on their side." So nervous folks exercised what's left of their Second Amendment rights while they still have them. To some degree, Obama actually shielded the gun industry from the general economic slump.
  • Surprise surprise, hand-wringing love-me-love-me-love-me "conservative" sellout/Palin-disser Peggy Noonan, for one, welcomes her Obamessiah overlord. (As you may recall, we don't.)
  • A Roman Catholic news source provides the (to it) hopeful headline, "New survey shows Protestants’ loyalty flagging." The substance? More Protestants would consider going to a church of another denomination than would Roman Catholics. Yep, that's it. In other words: Breaking news! Christians deify God, not their denomination! While to Roman Catholics — as anyone who's tried to point a Roman Catholic to Christ will agree — in every way but formally, their sect is their god. I once went door to door evangelizing, doing a survey, offering an earlier printed version of my How Can I Know God? People of every description would talk to us, would accept the paper, and would actually read it — except one. You guessed it: Roman Catholics. Often, they don't even attend church. But they check the boxes (which is all Rome requires), and are just Roman Catholic enough not to be willing to listen to the Gospel.
  • Proof #497 that actors should only say things smarter people write for them: Tom Hanks delivers himself of the opinion that Mormon supporters are "un-American."

But... my heart said it was true and the guy said "God bless you" - how could I have known it was all a lie? Sounds familiar.

So is Hanks for legalizing polygamous marriage as well?

In an effort to be more agreeable -I agree with Tom Hanks that Mormons are unAmerican - not because of Prop 8, but just generally. I agree with Peggy Noonan that the view from the plane coming into Reagan airport is spectacular (in stark contrast to the reality on the ground). I might have agreed with the rest of her article but the excessive saccharine exposure pushed me into a diabetic coma and I was unable to finish it. I certainly agree with the Catholic church that brand loyalty is important but the downside is that I will not be able to brush my teeth now until I find out what brand of toothpaste Pope Benedict uses.

Oh great. We witness the unveiling of a kinder, gentler RT.

Putting "gratuitous" quote's around word's that don't "deserve" them is only slightly less "annoying" than putting apostrophe's on "plural's."

I "agree" with that too, although sometimes such mark's have meaning, as in "president" - well, you know.

Wow. Sounds exactly like my sister, who converted to Roman Catholicism. Try to discuss the Gospel with her and what her "church" teaches, and you might as well be talking to a piece of obsidian.

Hey Dan--

whaddya think of replacing obamessiah with this, right out of Genesis 36:

Oholibama?

I don't think that the fact that it's referring to a female really matters that much.....

(runs for the hills.....)

Dan,

What are you "really" talking about here? "Quotation marks" are not "overrated". They're just, um, "misused", "abused", "just put in the wrong places", as I would say. You can say "Nope", "You're wrong", "Please leave my blog forever, doesn't Frank need fans?", "why, why do I do this"...but then you'd reply "I love my readers, and pray this is a blessing to them".

But don't quote me on that.

As a South African that lived in the U.S. for two years, I simply love watching American politics. Just as in any other countries there are people of all stripes that get conned by new politicians.

That seems to be true of Peggy Noonan. From erstwhile conservative to turncoat within the space of only one election. And that by a mesmerizing double talker!

Peggy said: Mr. Obama is a writer, and he sees himself as a writer. It is an important part of his self-perception. He is the author of two books

Too bad she is too besotted to see how Obama writes just like William Ayers.

NLB,

I've been reading in the 30s of Genesis recently and came across that as well.

Maybe instead of saying stuff like Holy Cow or Holy Mackrel, we'll start hearing "Holy Bama!"

"Oh, Holy Bama!"

I think my mom would slap my face and wash out my mouth with soap and say something about it being a sin (blasphemy, or something) if I were to exclaim that.

This is soooo soooo true!! Talking to one of my aunts the other day after everything I told her and explained to her the gospel in details, she was like well I'm a catholic and I've always been a catholic and thats that. *sigh*
I told her aunt you say I'm the one who "got into religion" but you're not even listening to what I'm saying it looks like you're the "Religious" one.
Then she just said I was brainwashed! sad.

"And you think "Yeah, right. Who falls for this?" Sadly, now we know who falls for it: this guy."
My poor dad almost fell for a scam like that, despite the fact that I've told him and my mom a gazillion times to never open emails from unknown people!

Dan and Rita,

On the Roman Catholic comment, I know I'm not telling you both anything new, but Poythress reminded me of something important as I was reading through one his books.

And that is one of the features of idolatry is deceit. In the case of Rome, idolatry conceals from itself that it is idolatry.
