Just to close the loop begun here: I'm planning to get the new iPhone when it comes out (it is anticipated) in June.
The iPhone just stands head and shoulders above most, but has a few shortcomings. Buzz is that these will be worked out in the new iPhone.
I don't love waiting 2-3 months and lacking tools I could use now. But I just think if I bought the current version now, and in a few months it's replaced, I'd feel foolish.
So now you know that.
My beloved and only daughter thinks it's cool that I'm getting an iPhone. Being cool with my daughter is... well, cool!
UPDATE: although... Sharp is about to release this waterproof solar-powered cell phone "made from recycled plastic bottles and features a built-in pedometer that calculates savings on carbon emissions from walking versus driving in a car." It'd be so... so green of me! Maybe Jack Bauer needs it.

Cool isn't all it could be, but, yep, being cool with the daughter is a good thing :)
I just hope I never log on to bibchr and see a Twitter reader in the sidebar...

Those who wait upon the iPhone shall renew their old plan. They shall mount up with frustrations over poor battery life; they shall text without spell chk; they shall surf the web with tiny screens. Help Dan, Lord, to wait.
Oh, and how blessed is it for fathers to dwell together with daughters in coolness. May 'the cool' run down Dan's beard like dew, all the way to his new leather pouch - for there rests his iPhone.
or something like that.
al sends
Al - LOL!
Squirrel - well, first, I'd have to understand Twitter. So I think you're safe for now.
I heard that is unpatriotic to wait.
JackW,
foolish Kindle 1 owner!
Aww... You aren't impressed by the Sharp Golden Calf phone?
... and speaking of Jack Bauer, you Lutherans need to check in with the Counter-Pietism Unit
Congratulations. Let me know how it works. I will probably follow you after when my contract expires. Just make sure you buy it at Best Buy so you can take advantage of the extended warranty offers and Good as Cash.
pretty nice, Dan.
Not *quite* as cool as this one, though.
Ooooooh.
Speaking of oooohhhhh, apparently this sites uses cookies. And as I clicked on the link that TBE has above, one of the advertisements on that page was an obviously customized for my area. An ad for a hot new "relevant" church. See, I told you Dan was going pomo...selling out. Sigh...
;-) (Or is it ;-( ? )
And for Green Day, I plan to keep my car idling all day. Just to show the world how wasteful that is. I encourage everyone else on the planet to do the same. That'll show the environment we care!
aww come on Mr. Squirrel there's nothing wrong with a twitter sidebar.. :P
Sounds like someone's considering going over to the Dark Side.
I just bought the 8GB iTouch. It is really nice!!
I still have a 80GB iPod too.
The Apple toys work so much better!
Logos also works with Apple now too!!
I may get an Air or MacBook Pro next.
Dan:
my wife informs me that my phone plan expires in May so we'll probably be sporting matching Iphones as well. Unless some amazing windows mobile phone wows me before the new Iphone hits.
Right, that's one of the "outs" I have to leave. I think companies are trying to come up with "iPhone killers." But they have a lot of lost ground to make up.
How about waiting until the Pomegranate comes out? Now that was one slick phone....
Susan... I'm 53.
I don't know how long I can wait!
Congrats on the decision! I am sure you will be happy with it :)
And just a little note, when Apple releases iPhone 3.0 software, it will be for all 3G iPhones (not sure about original iPhone). However, I think the new iPhone will be getting new features...
I'm glad you posted this because I am eligible for a new phone in May and was planning to get the current version of the iPhone, which Rob has. Since there's a new one coming out, I should probably wait until June... but it won't be easy as I have severe iPhone envy!
As to the caveat that "maybe Windows will come out with something better..." I just recently switched from PC's to an iMac and I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!! I am an Apple convert. Microsoft could make a program that converts my freshly-mowed grass clippings into gold and I would still stay with Apple.
Kate:
Even if you wanted to go back, Apple would do everything in its power to prevent that. Once they have you, they OWN you.
Sir Aaron,
I am contemplating a witty yet truthful response. Something along the lines of "I am possessed only by the Holy Spirit of God."
I am torn between that type of response and a flippant one, such as "They don't own me! It's not an addiction! I can quit anytime I want!"
Option 3 is to be serious, and ask the question... what do you mean by that? Why wouldn't it be possible to go back, or to use both a PC and a Mac? If I wanted to, I could even partition the hard drive on my iMac and install Windows so I can use both... try THAT on a PC...
I think I'll go with option 3, but feel free to respond to either (or both) of the other two as well. :)
Kate: I was being facetious, so one of your first two responses would have been better. I especially like the second.
My dislike of Apple has to do with their insistance on using their own file formats, their own programs, etc. Sony is very much the same way. Apple stuff also costs much more (expecially their computers).
Dan,
I thought of you when I saw this on a blog I Google-Read:
Buy Apple Now or Wait.
Blessings,
Terry
Thanks for thinking of me Terry! I really appreciate it, and am checking it out.
It says don't buy now...wait.
So here's where I confess that the phone posts were ones that I just kind of read and thought "meh - I've got my husband's hand me down Blackberry, it works just fine, I don't need to read this"....
until over the weekend, when my beloved husbad accidentally turned said Blackberry into a brick (with a pretty flashing light) while trying to update the something-or-other.
And now he's telling me I need to chose a new phone. And asking me what features I want. Like I would know!!!
And so now I find myself having to go back and read every word of the phone posts to get edjykated.
Guess I'll know better next time to read every, single word.
:)
Oh, and I'm pretty sure I'm just going to get an iPhone. :)
Rachael: You, Dan, and I should make a point to text each other the day we all get our new Iphones!!!
I'm just waiting for the new one to come out. My wife is supposed to be checking on our discounts for the plans.
Me too, Sir Aaron.
Well, Rachael, I hope we learned our lesson about this blog. Even the seemingly trivial posts....
