Fishing: now why did I never think of this?

And here all this time I've been quietly sneaking up and delicately presenting my dry fly, or chucking my lure....

This could also be a "You provide the subtitles" candidate.

Is it the light, the time of the year, or are those fish hardcore rockers?

Maybe hardcore fundies could use this to prove that deemin rock causes suicide.

(Thanks to regular reader NoLongerBlind for the tip)

I've seen this before. I think it has to do with the kind of fish they are. It's too bad steelhead or a bass, or a catfish won't do something like that.

Those look like Asian carp. They are a very successful invasive species in the Mississippi river basin who are destroying game fish and are threatening to invade the Great Lakes. Check out:http://rileysowner.blogspot.com/2008/03/asian-carp-dont-want-them.html

now...that's my type of fishing! Are they good eating? lol...good find!!

Exactly.

But the thing is, 99.9% of the time in my life I have fished for trout. Try that stunt on trout, and they will pack their bags, go to Expedia, and book a flight for Australia.

If fishin' was that easy all the time, it wouldn't be any fun.

No doubt, because God has an amazing sense of humour and irony, these fish probably taste vile, and aren't worth eating.

The Creator who designed the giraffe and platypus would almost certainly find such an irony amusing, I think.

Interestingly, my word verification is "combsea." Sort of fishin' related...

Whoa!

The boys thank you for this educational diversion from their school work :0)

Where is this? Is this some kind of Cajun thing?

Actually, the first thing it brought to mind is the stories a friend of ours tells. He goes way, way up the Amazon River for ministry. Down there the last thing you want to be doing is shining a light around at night.

It attracts the snakes.

YEEEEEeeeeggghhhhhk!

I hear snakes actually taste good.

I did a quick google and saw that some said that the silver carp were decent eating. IF I lived there, we'd be eating fish every night.

@DJP

Here's proof that at least one of those trout you chased found its way to New Jersey!

Sir Aaron is thinking practically. So is a senator from Illinois, where the carp are taking over the Illinois river...

"Illinois State Senator Mike Jacobs also wants to expand the market for Asian carp. For one thing, he'd like to see it on the menu in state prisons."

(from NPR)

He ought to talk to that sheriff in Texas that keeps the prisoners in army tents :0)

Riley's right. That was probably in Louisiana, where the invasive species is indeed attracted to light, and to noise. And yep, they don't taste good.

The internet research I did, which I admit was limited, indicated this carp is different than the European variety and actually tasted pretty good if kept fresh. Some commercial fisherman are actually switching to Carp and selling them to places like Japan. They say their profits went up! (apparently they get them to jump into nets after they've been hearded somewhere.

Julie:

The Sheriff of which you are thinking, is Joe Arapio from Maricopa County, Arizona.

Ah, thank you Sir Aaron. I'm in the geographical vicinity, but missed the state.

Go Joe :0)
