Big Announcement Watch thread

A bit earlier, I put up this "status" on Facebook:
Dan Phillips thinks nobody will believe him, though it's true: he really truly should finally be making his big announcement Tuesday, on Pyro
Then came the unhinged predictions of the unpronounceable Gil Sebenste:
Have we seen the last of DJP on Pyro? Or, the last "hither and thither", just as it was gaining steam?

Maybe he's gonna announce he's running to replace Ahhhnold.

Thankfully, it's not going to be him going to a local congregation where he would rebuke and bless the socks off of them simultaneously, and then we never hear from him again. That would truly be the end of the world and the start of Armageddon. I can relax now.
At that point, I realized it could be more fun here.

Now, I could do this on Pyro. But it's not my day today, and I'd feel ookie.

So — feel free to post predictions here.

Then tomorrow the real fun (for me, at least) should start.

My first guess would have been that you're taking a pastorate. My second guess would have been that you've accepted an appointment from Barack Obama to be one of his spiritual advisors. (snort, chortle)

Although he could indeed use some sound theology.

You've convinced J.J. Abrams to re-release Star Trek without all the lens flare?

Rebecca Stark said...

I'm guessing the pastor thing, too.

Barbara said...

I'm with Solameanie and Rebecca. I seem to recall something in a meta not too long ago with somebody asking if you were still available and you answering that you were.

Are you...is it? Could it be? No longer a free agent? Taken? Covenanted?

Kim said...

I'm hoping that it's the pastor thing and that it's in a place where I could drive for a visit.

Either that, or you're getting a Twitter.

Book deal.

I'm just not sure what kind of book, whether a passionate, challenging non-fiction or a slightly bizarre fiction book that's both thoroughly Christian in worldview and worth reading.

Second guess: You found the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, and Noah's cargo manifest, and will be selling them on eBay.

Daniel said...

I was going to go with the pastorate as well, though book deal sounds good too.

It's a History Channel show!

You've discovered a way to make a living at blogging?

DJP said...

If so, Challies got there first.

A pastorate where it is flat...no mountains. Nebraska. Iowa. Kansas.

GrammaMack said...

Some very fortunate church is about to get you as their pastor? I hope so, for their sakes!

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Dan,

That's a bit eerie as my word verification for that comment was
"challis".

Actually, my first thought was that some "lucky" (if I may use that word) congregation has called you, but everyone else thought of that.

My later thought was that you were going to work with/for Logos.

Rachael Starke said...

Well, I already called book deal a couple weeks back, but I'm going with Gil's suggestion that you're running for governor.

Hope and change is coming back to California!!

1. You've bought a new phone.

2. You're moving to a real blog on Wordpress ;)

O, Dan,

If it's a pastorate, take you day job with you. Sheep tend to beat and starve the shepherd. Don't be a "burden" except for the weight of God's Word.

Blessings (whatever you announce!)

well, i know it has been a long hard struggle for you brother, but we paedos are a welcoming lot. Now that you have finished your study of the covenant in Scripture know that there are no better Presbyterians than former Baptists. We will give you the secret handshake at the next meeting.

CR said...

I agree with Rachael. It's some book deal. But the way it works with book deals is it takes at least 12 months for the book to go on the shelf.

So, my guess is a book deal.

CR said...

Al,

Dan will never be a Presbyterian.

trogdor said...

Have we been told that it's not a "Grandpa Phillips" announcement? Or maybe he's having a not-quite-as-miraculous-as-Isaac child of his own?

Maybe he finally found that decoder ring he's been looking for?

Will he be sharing a prophetic vision in an angelic tongue?

Or perhaps he's joining the Acts 29 church planting network?

Some girl in his class kicked his butt until he became an egalitarian?

He's becoming a 'facilitator' at Solomon's Porch. Yeah, that's it.

VcdeChagn said...

First job..fix all of the typos in Vol I of John MacArthur's Romans commentary!

My guess is a new pastorate..because it's the first thing I thought of.

Though progeny or progeny 1 generation removed is a decent possibility as well.

Maybe he's getting a mac (snort)

NoLongerBlind said...

I know!

You've been chosen to replace the
Unbelieving Bishop!Scotland will never be the same!

Susan said...

The pastorate. It has to be the pastorate. I'm going with my gut.

Susan said...

Either that, or you've joined the Meshugga Beach Party!

(Or even the unthinkable: You're going to tell us that you're really really really John Malkovich!!!)

FX Turk said...

I'm guessing that DJP will tell you when he's bloody good and ready, and that the the weeping and gnashing of teeth will, frankly, be global, immediate, and horrifying.

Since I already know, all I can say is that when you finally hear it, you will never be the same again.

FX Turk said...

I'm surprised that so few people are voting "presbyterian elder". Is that really that far-fetched?

Susan said...

Frank, you can't be serious about the Presbyterian elder thing...

or are you...?

SQLSvrMan said...

I would hate to guess. It could be several things.

BTW, Dan I took the plunge and bought a MacBook (and a copy of VMWare Fusion). I also upgraded it to 4GB of memory (I'm an IT guy too). My Logos is (for now) running on an XP VM. It is Wonderful! I also have and iTouch (I don't need an iPhone).

May the Lord bless you in whatever endeavor it is! (I hope that you now have a pastorate!)

CR said...

Frank: I'm surprised that so few people are voting "presbyterian elder". Is that really that far-fetched?Not unless you can change Holy Scriptures.

CR said...

This is unfair that Frank knows and is allowed to comment. He'll spin this whole thing just to have fun.

Dan and I go to the same church everyone. Trust me, he's not becoming an elder. So don't let Frank fool you! :=)

I say he's been writing or co-authoring a book. He's taken a break from leading men's fellowship so whatever this project is, it has taken him a lot of time. It has to do something with writing. I don't think it would just be pastorate. He wouldn't need to take time off for that.

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Frank,

That really wasn't kind - rubbing our noses in your insider knowledge, and then dragging a red herring across the trail.

Julie

DJP said...

Oh, I wouldn't be so sure. Frank is 'WAY clever enough to do a double-clutch.

But then...

...what am I doing?

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Tormenting us?

And enjoying it?

CR said...

Okay, can you do like Obama did with Biden and text message certain folks what you're doing like 3 am in the morning. (My phone number is in the church directory).

Of course, the flop was everyone knew who Obama's choice was for VP before it was text messaged.

FX Turk said...

Who said anything about eldership at his -current- church?

Is that the only presbyterian church in California? Does it have to be in California?

Dan -- even my readers would have figured this out by now, and I'm surprised that Doug Wilson hasn't come over here to lend some wet brush to the fire so as to intensify the smoke.

CR said...

Okay, here's another crack at it. Justin Taylor has asked Dan Phillips to join him as a team member at Between Two Worlds and Dan has been preparing some blogs that will appear at B2W very soon.

CR said...

Hmmmm...I've checked Drudge Report. Nothing on Dan there yet there either.

NoLongerBlind said...

This just came to me:

Dan's got a book deal, to write The definitive Commentary on Proverbs.

Goin' to the bank with that one.

Way to go, Dan.

Susan said...

Thanks for clearing Frank's smoke screen, CR. If Dan were to become a Presbyterian, he would have to come up with another word that sounds like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Rachael Starke said...

"Does it have to be in California?"That's it. All of his blogging on the horrors of living in this godforsaken state has convinced him to pack it in and become Joel Osteen's new associate to rake in the big, less-taxed, bucks in Texas. Because it's still a church - all those tax deductions and all.

Dan has decided that this November he's going to go around wishing everyone a "Happy Turkey Day."

What do I win for getting it right?

CR said...

No, problem Susan. I've tried doing my research and I'm coming up empty. One of the things that came to mind was, is Dan doing anything for the 2010 TG4 conference coming up next year. I came up empty. I don't know, it's possible he's working on some project for a conference. My money is still on a book though.

You're moving out of state (you've been a bit down on California and Sacramento lately) to pursue a career in political commentary with a conservative press organization. And/or you're going to consult officially on an imminent Republican Party overhaul.

And you're going to somehow manage to take movie reviewing par excellence to a wider audience even with your new and much-more-prominent day job. :)

You're going to come clean and stop writing under your pseudonyms, Frank and Phil?

I vote for the pastorate, at least I hope that's what it is.

Good point, Frank. I happen to know for a fact that Doug Wilson is a constant lurker on this blog.

First of all, I can't believe my comments have been blown out of proportion, maligned, misrepresented, abused, and otherwise given me short-thrift.

Of course, mind you, I'm loving every minute of it. Because now Dan has finally lifted the rock to see where his readers come from. ;-)

OK, I'm thinking pastorate. And Cent, you are dead wrong: It's not true that the world will ever be the same again with his announcement. THAT happened with his "Emergent everything" Teampyro blow out post that pretty much got nearly everyone laid off at Blogspot due to bandwidth overrun costs from their Internet Service Provider.

Then again, this here is post #61 on this thread, which is sort of like 610 thread posts on Pyro, so this is gonan be good.

Wait, wait...my Word Verification is "ingora". He's becoming spiritual advisor to Al Gore!

...OK, as Dan would say: "NEXT!"...

Maybe he could be spiritual adviser to Tony Campolo, Jim Wallis, and Donald Miller. They could sure use the help.

Random thought - what's the CA tax rate for book advances? If it's anything like taxes for commission-based employees like my husband, you're going to have just enough left to take your dear wife to a romantic dinner at Applebee's.

My first guess would be the pastorate, second guess would be, if I recall correctly you had a daughter to marry a little while back. Could it possibly be the pitter patter of a grandchild's feet?
