So, I'm thinking they've been watching Live Free or Die Hard too much lately.
The response he got was classic:
"The president of the United States has always had the constitutional authority, and duty, to protect the American people and direct the national response to any emergency that threatens the security and safety of the United States. The Rockefeller-Snowe Cybersecurity bill makes it clear that the president's authority includes securing our national cyber infrastructure from attack.
So, let me get this straight, the president already has the authority to do said things, but the bill just clarifies those rights? Blatant double-talk is all I can say! If he has the authority he has the authority and the government doesn't need to "clarify" anything.
Go Big Government Go!
Visions of Orwell's Big Brother
As someone around here astutely noted yesterday, "John's original audience would have had some trouble envisioning how anything like Revelation 13:16-17 could ever actually happen. We don't."
Speaking of Orwell. Did you guys hear that all of his books got taken off the Amazon Kindle network? I might be a little paranoid with what the government does, but not THAT paranoid!
Good thing I have the printed book on my desk right now. :D
Wait...so the site has been "hit" already, right? Because when I tried to click on the 8/29/2009 post on that site, the screen "URL not found" came on.
That's pretty sad. I mean, if this were done to the pornographic sites or something, I'd say it's not such a bad thing, despite the Orwellian overtones. If the "hit" is only on websites that have dissenting voices, however, that would be too much.
My word verification: diasters. (Are we only one away from internet disasters??)
Yikes.
Actually, let me rephrase and say that I'd be very happy if they would only "hit" the pornographic and other harmful websites!! (Why can't they be Orwellian about that instead?? The purpose would be to protect us citizens from harm and secure our pursuit of happiness!!) But leave other regular websites alone!
Isn't it the pornography squads that go after Bibles in China? The power we let Bush take for the executive branch might be used against us.
Liberals go for socialized medicine, not realizing it benefits the big powers they think they're against. We conservatives are suckers for a "war on drugs" and give up due process and give too much power to the executive office and law enforcement. We cheer for stiffer penalties for child abuse and less due process for the accused -- then all the liberals have to do is define "teaching the Bible" as child abuse. We'll get no fair day in court... and you just know how the story will sound on the news.
[well, if I'm going to rant, I may as well finish...] There is an agenda to establish a global socialist totalitarian state. You can see this in current events, see it in history, and read about it explicitly in the writings of people like John Dewey (for one example). Socialism and totalitarianism go together -- you cannot have socialism without totalitarianism. The Democratic and Republican parties are like carpenters and masons working on the same house. They get in each other's way, the drywallers can't put up the sheetrock until the electricians finish wiring... they fight with each other, but they are building the same house. The Democrats build the socialism, and the Republicans build up the police-state totalitarianism.
To be fair, the people of the US seem to be going along with it. I bet people will cheer the Antichrist too.
Sir Aaron,
Unfortunately, you are correct. Many in the U.S. are going along with this nonsense.
In some corners, however, I would assume there is talk of revolution.
We need to get at some of our custom databases remotely. A U.S. firm has proposed to implement this for us, and to store the databases at their centre in North Carolina. It was a good proposal, but we're gonna say "no".
I guarantee that there is going to be a "crisis" that will have Obama take leadership exclusively. Not only the internet will be controlled but a lot more will be controlled. Actually, the Patriot Act utilizes the Prez to take control should a crisis occur. There WILL be a crisis at some point that allows this government to take full control. We are very dependent on technology in our country. It wouldn't be that hard for control to happen.
Stan: IMHO, some have anticipated this sentiment and that is why that homeland security report was issued. Just my own speculation though
Certainly not impossible. Where is Obama getting resistance? Internet and talk-radio. The MSM is firmly in his pocket, with the occasional exception of FOX - and Obama has often criticized it by name, which I think exceptional in a president.
There's been talk of controlling both talk radio and the internet.
Just picture that nightmare scenario. If free voices on the internet and talk radio were silenced, what peaceful means of publicly-available information and resistance would remain? Are ham-radio and public couriers back in our future?
It isn't a wild-eyed, silly nor sci-fi question anymore.
Sir Aaron, You are probably correct. I don't think the government has any idea of how many citizens are talking of revolution in everyday conversation.
Why do you all think any president needs a bill or the patriot act to take absolute control? Please...
Stan:
Probably not. The hope is that most are just talk...easily silenced when action is required.
Remember Francis Schaeffer always talked about how people were willing to accept almost anything in order to insure personal peace and prosperity.
Fred,
It's cuz the government loves us and wants to protect us from ourselves. Only they know what's best for us. ;-)
Fred. They want things to look legitimate...at least for awhile.
