Monday Music: scariest music video I've ever posted

You have been warned.

Now look, I mean it. This is... okay, to remind myself why I titled it thus when I picked it, I re-watched the first ten seconds, then had to bail. This guy is a big hit, I gather. And boy, will you feel as if you've been hit.

I appreciate loyalty, but please, don't feel as if you have to watch the whole thing for me. Really. Bail anytime. Though I will say you will only appreciate the full horror if you watch it all.

Then, when you're done, click the tag and cleanse your palate with one of our more pleasant Monday Music offerings.

Okay. Braced? Here y'go.

...and yet, believe it or not, that one is not nearly as scary as this. As if you haven't had enough. But I have my limits.

Hey, there's an accordion in there...

Yes. With a black hood on. Like the violinists.

Can you blame them?

GrammaMack said...

Phew. I was afraid it was going to be KD Lang singing at the Olympics. Now that's scary! (And wrong; just wrong.)

I think that he was simply using the same voice synth technology as "Charlie Bit Me," which is still the house favorite. If not, then we may have to travel to Russia to check his man card.

Brad Williams said...

Okay, apparently the first was not enough for me, and I endured about 45 seconds of the second link. Dan, you should probably explain how you even found that second video or I'm calling your elders about your internet habit. :)

DJP said...

A. I don't think we need to move an inch to check his card.

B. I could tell you how I find my weekly flow of musical eclecticity... but then I'd have to KEEEEEEL you.

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Are his musicians Muslim women? Why is everyone hooded? Is he lip-synching a theremin?

Why does he DO that?

DJP said...

I think this is not a video that does well with "Why."

In other news - theremin.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say how proud I am to be an American.

My wife (originally from Russia) informed me that this video is several years old. The song was one of Vitas' early hits. Apparently, his act became more and more strange in the following years. The second video that you linked to is a good example.

However, he has since lost the schtick. He still goes unnervingly high in some of the songs, but without the show.

This song is one of the newer ones:

One last bit of info...many Russian artists are actually lip-synching when they perform live and in some cases they aren't even doing it to their own pre-recorded tracks. I can't say if that's the case with this guy, but it wouldn't be surprising.

DJP said...

In this context, "more and more strange" are scary words indeed.

Herding Grasshoppers said...

@ Gramma Mack,

Watch that video, to which Dave shared a link.

White suit.

Maybe it IS k. d. lang.

dwitzke said...

The second one reminds me of some sort of twisted Gumby choir/band.

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Ewwww, that second video really is frightening.

Why has PeeWee Herman come to mind?

Chris Anderson said...

@ the "proud to be an American" thing. You do remember that we produced Prince, Michael, and a host of others, right? :)

DJP said...

Yeah... but we didn't produce this guy.

Point, set, match.

I am so not into pop culture and thus I had never heard the song K.D. Lang sang at the Olympics and it bothered me very much, because...
A. Her performance was stunning. She has an incredible voice and that song was perfect for her range.
B. The song itself is compellingly beautiful.
C. Though there were biblical words in the there, it clearly wasn't a godly song.
D. It is another one of those songs that makes people feel good about themselves and the accomplishments of mankind in general, when they should feel shameful because of their sinfulness.
E. The acoustics were amazing - which contributed to point D.
F. The woman is lost and is using her life and her amazing talent for her own glory and not to the glory of her Creator, who gave her life and that incredible ability.

P.S. At the risk of depriving myself of more pop culture, I am not going to watch any of the video; I am taking your word for it that it is a dreaded thing.

DJP said...

That's absolutely fine, Becky, truly it is — but you do get that my video is not in any way KD Lang?

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Oops. Sorry.

I think I caused that bit of confusion. I was joking about it being k.d. lang

Becky Schell said...

Yes, I knew that. I gathered from Dave's comments that it was out of Russia. It was just that GrammaMack prompted me to express what has been on my mind since Friday night. Talking about Lang didn't seem completely off track anyway. There are lots of productions out that the world is buying in to.

I can't decide if it is because I am getting older or because things are getting worse, but the tragedy of sin as it is playing out in the world is really standing out to me lately.

Chris Anderson said...

Dan, I could start posting videos of US embarrassments to challenge your self-proclaimed victory. But let's not go there, eh? :)

DJP said...

Actually, Chris, I would have assumed that you would never have seen such videos.

I watched most of the first video, and I thought it was kinda cool. Maybe I'm a typical product of the Christian culture Dissidens bemoans?

If I did not live in a contributory negligence state, I would be in contact with my attorney. To post such a thing, even with the disclaimer, is outrageous conduct.

He lulled you in at the beginning with his dulcet tones too...

Vitas is really really famous in Russia and in some parts of Asia. I first knew about him when I saw this Asian singer do an off-the-cuff parody on his hit song on YouTube and I nearly died from laughing. Makes you wonder whether his falsetto is real or not! It's not human, I tell ya!

Susan said...

(3GD, I don't know if you have Trader Joe's in your area, but they have pretty good French Roast. Try it with sweetened condensed milk! You just might like it...but I won't hold my breath.) :)

Christian said...

You could always have gone with some Soviet Bon Jovi era androgynous high-pitched music, which would have been much worse there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEh8ld7Gf9A

Oh dear. Nothing like a brisk whiff of helium to help your singing.

The first fifty seconds or so wasn't my cup of tea, but there wasn't anything particularly awful about it. Given that and how strong the warnings were, my dread at what might be coming mounted. Can't say I was disappointed. Utterly terrifying.

But I will say that it was, um, impressive?, how he was able to hit notes accurately in that register. Control is always most difficult at the limits, so kudos for that, I guess. In an unrelated story, I will now go praise the production values of NOOMA videos and the typesetting in Brian McLaren's new book.

connie said...

My husband liked it.

Should I be worried?

DJP said...

Well, Connie, there could be... maybe he just... I suppose, it's possible that....

Yes.

Susan said...

Today I realized that there is an act comparable to Vitas...this guy from Britain. You've been warned! (But at least this guy can possibly give both Luciano Pavarotti and Sarah Brightman a run for their money [if Pavarotti were still alive, that is]!

Susan said...

(If you can't stand the entire clip, skip down to about 3:46 for all the judges' comments--make sure you listen to Simon Cowell's thoughts on the performance.)

What exactly was wrong with this video? I'm sorry, I didn't get the point, except that the hooded musicians were strange.

But the singer was excellent.

Lisa said...

ummmm.... oooo... horrific doesn't even come close. wow. couldn't watch the whole thing.
