Monday music: "So Long to the Red River Valley," The Quebe Sisters

Psst.

I'll let you all in on a little secret. Dear Wife doesn't love all of my Monday Musics. True fact. She's not partial to jazz, and I guess a lot of my picks lean jazzward.

But here I think I have one she might like. The style here is Western (not Country/Western, ick), or Cowboy. Valerie introduced me to that style when she turned me on to the Sons of the Pioneers, a love of hers since she was a young'un.  I came to love their harmonies, and especially their hot fiddler — who (don't tell her) is very jazzy.

Reader Kurt Kroeker sent me to the Quebe Sisters, and now I send you. Their style is reminiscent of the Sons of the Pioneers, except hel-lo? "Sisters."

Here's for you, Valerie!

Yep.

Figured. Talent and the ability to work together gave it away... Well, that and the hair styles.

The singing.

No offense to Mrs. DJP, but this one was not up my alley.

But alas, that is the nature of eclectic, yes?

Yep! That's eclectic.

In case I wasn't clear, I like this, too. And love classic Sons of the Pioneers.

(It's not yet confirmed whether Mrs. P likes today's offering; it's a surprise, a Monday-morning gift to her.)

Sandman,

Aw, come on! They sound like the Andrews Sisters! Just pure sweetness!

Wow...I can't believe I haven't heard of them. Love this music.

Also love Sons of the Pioneers. If you ever have a chance to see them perform live, you won't want to miss it.

But if you haven't heard the original Sons, you need to get their stuff. There was a raw, electric sizzle that was lost in the later, slicker, more studio-tized recordings.

There's nothing like family harmony.

I love to see old styles of music brought back faithfully by kids. At one of my regular gigs, a scrawny 11-year-old girl came to audition, opened up her mouth, and out came - Patsy Cline.

What fun! Thanks for this one.

Here's another fun one by the Quebe Sisters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcRgdHASYz8&feature=related

Gosh, I love that sound. But it took a while to grow on me.

Never would have figured Don Sands to be the one to get Dean Martin on my site.

such a sad song, reminds me of the red river flood of 97 which destroyed downtown Grand Forks. sigh. so long to the red river valley.

I hope Mrs. P appreciates your gift as much as the rest of us! I really didn't know there was a category called Western that was so different from Country/Western and so different from Bluegrass (both of which I enjoy in moderation). But I like it! It makes me want to buy a nice cute but practical pair of cowboy boots to wear while I'm doing the housework in my jeans and vintage apron.

: )

Thanks to your blog, I'm starting to like Mondays more than Fridays!

Yes, it was a "WIN" for my dear wife. It reminds her of the music her multi-talented grandfather used to play. Now she's going to get some Sons to listen to.
