Monday music: "Hoedown," by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (and friends)

What could be more fun than a little Bela Fleck? A lot more Bela Fleck, in a very tight and very fun arrangement of Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown."

Bela Fleck came to my attention, because I (twice?) saw him open for Chicago, playing with The Flecktones.

By the way, if you don't know this band: looking for the drummer? It's the guy in black with the turquoise headgear, holding the weird-looking "guitar." He's "Future Man," he's the drummer — and he's a little weird.

That was really cool! We used to have an eBay CD store and we sold a lot of Bela Fleck albums. I'd never heard any till now. Thanks:)

Very fun! Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are one of my favorite groups, but I never had the pleasure of seeing them live. The Wooten brothers are hometown musical heroes here.

Victor Wooten (bass) is absolutely amazing. He'd do these bass solos in concert, and mid-play he'd slap his bass and swing it around his neck, then continue playing.

I know that's just showmanship, but his skilz are undeniable.

Cracks me up seeing the Dead Heads off to the side, standing up doing there own unique style of boogieing to the music, while everyone else (the normal folk) are sitting down, enjoying the entertainment.

It's like looking at the old (B.C.) me!!

This reminded me of this quote by John Newton: "I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am."

Thanks for posting this.

Christians don't boogie, don't get moved by music?

If not... uh-oh.

It's not the boogieing, per se, it's the unique, Dead-Head style that I pointed out.

That, and the fact that they stand UP! to do it, without consideration of those behind and around them - and I was reminded of my old self, that's all.

Well yes, standing up in front of sitting concert-goers is Wrong.

And talking! Talking all through a performance. And constantly getting up and walking out and back during songs. Also Wrong, and Wrong!

That's the only jazz basoon solo I'm likely to see today.

And speaking of Victor Wooten, here's one of him breaking a string (at 2:47) and proceeding to jam for several minutes before going absolutely bonkers. Rare talent.

Fun yes. Even more fun after he lost the phoney electric banjo and picked up a real one.

Guy on the left sitting on the mattress. I've seen people sitting and talking like that before. Usually right before I come at them with a syringe full of Haldol.
