Any point in doing a Hither and Thither this week?

Seems like commenting readers vanish around holidays.

I have no comment on the matter.

Just kidding. No Hither and Thither on the day before Christmas?!?

I doubt even Ebenezer Scrooge would consider such a thing.

tobekiwi said...

Oh yes, please do! A special Christmas edition, if you will. It...it...just wouldn't be Friday without it....(sniffle)

If you do Hither and Thither I promise to come and comment for what would be the second time in my years of readership (this, of course, being the first time).

+1 I don't post too much, but really do enjoy.

Gee Dan, I was going to say take the week off , but now - seeing the other comments - I feel like a Scrooge. Oh well. Merry Christmas either way!

I think I woulda been disappointed not to crank up my HP dinosaur on Friday morning and fail to see H/T in my reader. Sniffle.

I will be here. With bells on.
It's not like we don't have the internet at the house or something.

DJP said...

But sometimes the stats do make one wonder, Fred: do 70% only read blogs at work?

Merry Christmas to you and yours Dan!

I saw H/T on Christmas Eve,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
I saw H/T on Christmas Eve,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

Oh, Dan made it for all his fans,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
Oh, Dan made it for all his fans,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

Oh, what was in that post, you say?
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
Oh, what was in that post, you say?
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

There were news events and pixel pics,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
There were news events and pixel pics,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

Frank Turk was there, and Phil was too,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
Frank Turn was there, and Phil was too,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

And all throughout the combox rang,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
And all throughout the combox rang,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

Then let us all rejoice again,
On Christmas Eve, on Christmas Eve.
H/T has came 'cause Dan's our friend,
On Christmas Eve in the morning.

Long time lurker, first time commenter (the heavy hitters around can be intimidating). For what it is worth, I would miss it if you did not post a Christmas Eve H&T.

Any point? ANY POINT? Since when has the number of comments been a good reason to post or not to post? Have you forgotten this:

http://bibchr.blogspot.com/2010/04/on-blogging-philosophy-etiquette.html

(I'm sorry. I never did master that html tag bit. I'm a slow learner.)

I'm sure a good number of your readers have legitimate excuses for their absence since...Thanksgiving, such as baking cookies or fighting stomach viruses or Christmas shopping, to name a few of my own. But don't you let that stop you from posting. Because once we all get done unwrapping presents and eating ham, and are faced with the choice to either read instruction manuals in Spanish or read Hither & Thither, you know what our choice will be. No hablo Espangnol. ; )

Merrilee Stevenson said...

Halcyon just penned my favorite new Christmas carol.

Pagey said...

I'll be here too...

Merry Christmas Dan!

From another Long Time Lurker.

Margaret said...

Please!

Sonja said...

No one says it like Halcyon. ;)

Merry Christmas!

Rachael Starke said...

Wow.

I never thought I'd see the day when someone supplanted DPR as BibChr/Pyro Court Jester and Music Maker.

But Halcyon may have done it.

I was going to go with Julie and say enjoy a few days sipping eggnog.

Aaron said...

"What if only ten can be found there?"

Ok...totally the wrong application of Genesis 18...but I think it makes my point.

Halcyon said...

The people have spoken, DJP.

What will you do?

Kris N. said...

I don't comment very often, but I look on this page every day. I'd miss H/T if it weren't here!

100 Mile Pants said...

Any excuse for a day off! Get to it, Dan! Your public awaits...

Terry Rayburn said...

Personally, I wish you wouldn't publish it, because it's more impossible to ignore than the animal balloon guy at a kid's birthday party, and we've got better things to do, like...like...

...well...

Semi-seriously, you must know the parable of the guy on the beach throwing one of millions of stranded starfish back into the water, the act being of importance to the single starfish, even if the others gasped their last starfish breath in the dry sand?

Don't let all of us dry up in the sand, just because the hoards may be too busy.

At least an abbreviated one.

DJP said...

This is extremely cool. My seven-word post provoked wonderful responses, prodded out some great lurkers, and provoked both an original carol and the phrase "their last starfish breath."

I think I'm committed!

But remember: I also have some promised commenters here!

Terry Rayburn said...

"I think I'm committed."

Is that an intentional or accidental oxymoron?

In any case, what a coincidence.

When I read H&T, I often think, "This guy Phillips should be committed." :)

I have enjoyed HT ever since I stumbled upon them after lurking around on Pyro for a good long while.

It makes me smile, especially any SW references.

Marla said...

I don't have anything nifty like the previous comment-ers, but I love H&T (and frankly with all my kids home this week, need a little laugh). I always look forward to Fridays because of it! Don't let us down Dan. :=)

SolaMommy said...

Pretty please with a cherry on top? :-)

Susan said...

You MUST! (If you don't, you'll forget that I submitted something that could possibly make your rigorous selection process for this week!! Have you no regard for the self-esteem of this egotistical maniac!?!?)

;)

Ron (aka RealityCheck) said...

So now that’s enough of this silly talk of no HT Daniel J. Phillips (or whatever your Mom called you when she really wanted your attention).

So get in there and make us proud… as usual.

Anna said...

Please do one - and make it super-long! Some of us need a reason to retreat from our crazy families to the comfort of our Blackberry. I promise I will read every link!

Sharon said...

I bet at least 30% of your readers are stay-at-home-moms, and we don't get time off for Christmas :-)

DJP said...

Anna, it's an odd thing, but the long ones often seem to generate the fewest comments, and most slowly.

Randy Talley said...

Sorry, brother. I don't have any recommendations either way about posting on Friday. But I can promise you I read and reread your Christmas posts at Team Pyro, and whoever is in earshot on Christmas day when I read it has no choice but to listen.

Anonymous said...

Please do.

Sonja said...

We could all make things easier on Dan by innundating him with helpful Christmas links.

But he would have to review each one, which would lead to glazed-over eyes. So "helpful links" may be an artful term. IOW, who is it helping?

It's the thought that counts.

Brother, you're loved! :)

Sharon said...

Please do post H&T. I read your blog daily and have only commented twice that I remember (for the same reason as The Pauper stated). Fridays wouldn't be the same without your H&T.

GrammaMack said...

If you post it, I will come.

And comment.

Steven said...

Maybe a best of bacon H&T would be especially festive.

trogdor said...

If you post it, the earliest I may be able to read it would be Sunday night, and almost certainly no comments until Monday, if at all. Maybe my situation is similar to other holiday non-commenter types:

We're going to visit my mother that weekend, and we only get to see her about thrice a year. We'll see my desperately lost brother for the first time in a year, as well as the nieces and nephews who we're always seemingly one arrest away from adopting. While we're there, we need to fully be there. Blog commenting gets pushed even further down the priority list during a weekend like that. We'll still read when we can get to it, but interaction will be more focused on family than blogs.

Everone can pitch in to the H & T.

For example, giving you lots of cat pictures to choose from.

Seems thou must Hither and Thither lest we all wither away.

If you do a H&T on Friday I will comment. I'm sorry about that.

I must partake of your wit. Please do.

Colloquist said...

To tip the scales just a teeny bit further: as a VIC (Very Infrequent Commenter) and a DR (Daily Reader), I pledge to you that I will not only read H&T on Friday, I will also comment. Probably won't be an original carol, but I will comment. :o)

Herding Grasshoppers said...

Gee Dan, you are hostage to your public! I still stay, take a break if you want, but if you post, I will read :D

I mean, hey... my family isn't coming until evening. I've got all day...

Random thoughts:

"And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them." Mark 15:8

If a verse could scream from being ripped out of context, that one would, but it seems to fit the spirit of this comment stream.

"What, no H&T? My day will be dimmer but I'll survive. If you feel that no one will read it then I think we have disproved that misconception. But even so, don't feel obligated in spite of the clamoring mob. If you want a week off, take it. You more than deserve it. Thanks for all your efforts.

Loved the carol. Can’t wait for it to get the Disney treatment it deserves complete with ride and can’t get it out of your head soundtrack ala “It’s a small world after all.” Though the thought of an audioanimatronic Frank Turk is disturbing to say the least.

And about the 70% only reading at work, of course we do. Why would we read this on our own time.
