Terrific December deals from Kress, topped by John Kitchen's The Pastoral Epistles for Pastors

Hola, amigos.

Kress Biblical Resources is offering four books at a staggering 75% discount for the Christmas month of December for American buyers.

I am only personally familiar with one of the books: John Kitchen's The Pastoral Epistle for Pastors. John is pastor of a CMA church in Ohio. My first contact with him came when I reviewed his commentary on Proverbs. That began a bit of a correspondence cyber-friendship, which led to John's gracious agreement to read and critique the manuscript of my own book of Proverbs studies.

I actually mean to provide a more thorough (at least) survey of the book. But for now I can say this: John is a very careful reader and commenter. He brings to my mind R. C. H. Lenski in this regard: he pores over every word and point of grammar with great care and reverence. John has a high regard for the text, and loves God. We're not exact matches doctrinally (ditto most commentators), but that doesn't at all keep me from using and recommending his careful, reverent treatments.

The book is well-done, as I've learned to expect of Kress. It is spotted with "Ministry Maxims" boxes, making pointed applications of various passages.

And now, for December only, if you use the code BR60833557256, you will get a 75% discount.

That same discount also applies to these books:
If any of you have read any of them, please chime in.

Just enter the code BR60833557256 to receive your 75% discount on checkout.

Only these four books.

Terrific buy: James Hamilton's biblical theology for Kindle at $7.99

I am reading and loving James Hamilton's masterpiece God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment: A Biblical Theology.  It is a triumph of godly, passionate, artistic scholarship. Hamilton goes through the entire Bible. I'm up to Matthew and, unless he goes badly south sometime soon (which I don't expect), I plan to write a glowing review when I finish.

All that to say that you Kindlers can now get this $40.00 book for $7.99. That is a terrific price for a first-rate book.

To be clear, I am profiting from all of it. I am learning a lot. I won't teach any of those books without checking Hamilton again. But that's not to say I agree with every word. For instance, I'll be praying for the brother's understanding of Isaiah 7:14.

But it's amazing how much we do agree. I started a letter to Dr. Hamilton marveling at how some things he says about Proverbs queues up with my Master's thesis on the book from '83 — but the letter's still unsent. It's uncanny, though; only he and I (that I've seen) make strong appeals to Deuteronomy 6:4ff. and 17 as critical for understanding Proverbs as principally authored by Solomon.

I digress.

Get the book.

The Gettys' St. Patrick's Day sale

Reader Jack W pointed out to me that the Gettys are holding a St. Patrick's Day sale. If the 0/Dem economy has left any paper in your pocket, check it out!

If you don't know the Gettys, they are among a few who are creating modern hymns — that is to say, music that is doctrinally rich, Cross-centered, and good music to boot.

It is just so sad for a church to fill its time with nothing but syrupy choruses and ditties, when we sit on a treasure-trove of timeless classic hymns, and artists such as the Gettys and Stuart Townend are crafting music that exalts God and nourishes the soul.

Afterthought: what if one bought Getty Music songbooks for "worship leaders"? Subtle? Like a sledge-hammer?
Update: reader Brad Williams correctly observes that I picked the wrong implement for the occasion. So here's the correction:

Way for churches to upgrade to Windows 7 ultra-cheap? (Update: apparently not)

Check it out. I don't know anything about the site, but if I pastored a church, I might be looking into it.

UPDATE: looks like churches cannot take advantage of the offer. Reader Stephen noticed this paragraph:

  • Religious organizations not registered as a charity and without a secular community designation that is separate from the church or religious organization. A secular designation is defined as an organization that provides services to people regardless of their religious beliefs and does not propagate a belief in a specific faith. Example: A food bank with nonprofit or charity status that is run by a church, but is a separate and unique organization that provides food and meals to anyone who qualifies for services, regardless of religious beliefs. Religious organizations without secular designations can visit Charity Open Licensing for information regarding licensing options.

Christian music sale

Here are a bunch of Christian music CDs for $5 each. I don't know contemporary Christian music, beyond Phil Keaggy. Are any of these worth $5?
