Hither and thither: 11/6/08

Shifting from exclusively news/column-oriented to, to... er, something else:
  • On election day, before any returns had returned, Douglas Wilson wrote an excellent, challenging, thought-provoking list of ten things to keep in mind.
  • Not content with that burst of wisdom, Wilson gives another blast of wisdom. Don't agree necessarily with every syllable, but there's a lot worth pondering. A few sips: "Everything else being equal, I would have been delighted to have a president with black skin. I just wish we could quit electing the ones with black hearts." And, "The financial crisis will hobble Obama somewhat. Clinton was able to bounce off Reagan's economic reforms, and act like he was flying. Obama will not be able" to do so. Finally, "conservatives clearly do not know how to govern very well. But they can be very good in opposition. Look for a much more defined and principled conservative voice to develop. Thesis invites antithesis, and no, I am not a Hegelian. But Mary Queen of Scots did not just give us Mary Queen of Scots -- she also gave history John Knox." But those are just tastes. Read the rest.
  • "Gay" — happy, carefree, glad. Back in the day. Now? “Gays” Call for Violence Against Christian Supporters of Prop 8 (that restored sanity to the meaning of the word "marriage"). Ah, the champions of tolerance and diversity (for me, not for thee) on the move, yet again. Just wait until the next cycle fails to get "mauve" named as a primary color! Mauve-lovers are vicious, I tell you. Vicious!
  • Pastor Tim Bayly makes me look like a tepid tea-drinker. And he's absolutely dead-right. Here's a brief snippet: "The emoting over Obama's blackness is cloying hypocrisy. If an African American ascending to our Imperial Throne means anything, its meaning is bound up with the end of the oppression of a group of persons who, formerly, were declared not to be full persons under our Constitution because of the color of their skin.

"Instead of learning the lesson of his skin color and descent, though, Obama glides into office on the blood of an entire generation of souls, red and yellow, black and white, who aren't enslaved, but slaughtered. In numbers that, each year, dwarf the oppression of slavery." One more: "What we ought to be teaching our children is the hypocrisy of whites and blacks celebrating this symbolic end of oppression as they dance on the bodies of millions of slaughtered babies they themselves have murdered." Preach it, brother.

  • Oh, before I forget: people voted for change? Look for a cabinet filled with the same inept, corrupt bunglers that infested Clinton's cabinet. I've said that since before the election, on the basis of nothing but my gut. Yet, lookie here, what's P-E O's first appointment? Rahm Emanuel — a Clinton WH staffer. As Ambassador Kosh might say, "And so it begins." Emmanuel is described as "a vicious graceless partisan: narrow, hectic, unremittingly aggressive, vulgar, and impatient." Ahh, feel the hope and promised "listening" in the air!

You do know that Chief of Staff is not a cabinet post, right? Did you have a similar problem when George W appointed the foul-mouthed partisan Karl Rove as one of his advisers? Or is it only Democratic partisans who are bad?

I'm getting lost, I guess. Is Bush taking office on a promise of hope and change and listening? I thought it was Obama.

Four More Years of ... Clinton?

Now there's change!

Last warning, Pratt. The rules apply to you, too.

Your insistence on trying to derail meta's by repeating the same oft-refuted snipes, as if for the first time, wore old long ago.

I thought the main thrust of Martin Luther King's speech was that it was the content of character, not the colour of skin that mattered. You know something, when a black man is elected president with the fanfare being about who he is, not what pigment he is, then that dream will be fulfilled. This is only one further step on the road.

You've nailed it as usual, Libbie. Take away the skin-color, and what's left? Palin nailed it at the convention: two memoirs, and no major legislation.

Actually, that's charitable. "What's left" is Ayers, Wright, opposing protection for children who survive abortions....

Obama names Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of Staff?

F*** the Democrats.

Oh. I'm sorry. That's not what Rahm Emanuel said. It was F*** the Republicans.

Unity? Change? Words.

I guess Obama is more adept at dismembering babies than he is at bringing Democrats and Republicans together.

From the article about homosexual violence:

Matt Barber, Director of Cultural Affairs with both Liberty Alliance Action and Liberty Counsel, said, “This is not just a matter of some people blowing off steam because they’re not happy with a political outcome. This is criminal activity. The homosexual lobby is always calling for ‘tolerance’ and ‘diversity’ and playing the role of victim. They claim to deplore violence and ‘hate.’ Here we have homosexuals inciting, and directly threatening, violence against Christians. This is not free speech; these are ‘hate crimes’ under the existing definition. Imagine if Christian Web sites were advocating such violence against homosexuals. There’d be outrage, and rightfully so. It’d be national front-page news. Federal authorities should immediately investigate these threats and prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. I also call on the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and other leaders within the homosexual lobby to immediately call for an end to these homosexual threats of violence against Christians.”

I hope that this election suffices as a call to Christians in America -

1) To pray for our country and it's leadership

2) To live out the gospel

3) To disciple others

4) To show respect for the man in the office even when we disagree with his policies.

When so many people can vote for Obama and identify themselves as Christians, there is something wrong with the church.

"Emmanuel is described as "a vicious graceless partisan: narrow, hectic, unremittingly aggressive, vulgar, and impatient."

While I'm no fan of Clinton, Obama or Emmanuel, that description would have also fit former Republican House Majority Leader Tom "The Hammer" DeLay.

Beinga vicious, graceless, partisan: narrow, hectic, unremittingly aggressive, vulgar, and impatient is never a good idea regardless of what party you belong too.

NNUTS — that full description doesn't fit what I know of Delay.

Gumm — Duh!

djp,

He easily fits 7 or 8 of those descriptions and he wasn't called the "The Hammer" for nothing.

I used to be on his phone list where I would get pre-recorded phone calls from him, and boy were they annoying. Even though I agreed with him on most issues, I found his tactics to be vicious and impatient to say the least.

A B5 fan, eh? Chalk that up in your "virtue" column.

If we are to be persecuted, let it be for the right thing. Which is to say, evangelicalism needs to stop being silly and brush up on the gospel.

Dan — haha, finally someone focuses on the heart of this post: the picture of the potato bug (a.k.a. "Satan's fetus").

After putting this post up, I got an email from my beloved daughter. The subject line was simply "Ewwwwwwwwwww." Without even opening it, I knew exactly what she was talking about. We share the same feelings about the dreaded insect.

Worse, I've had two cross my path in the last week.
