Hither and thither — 2/6/09

[Note: updates below]

Another helping — not as large as last week! — of odds and ends I found interesting:
  • "The gentler sex"? Not when a demonic murder-cult twists your mind. (Here is a bit more insight.)
  • Usually my Isn't Evolution Wonderful{tm} updates are video's, and this isn't, so I put it here. The language in this article is simply amazing. I am not making this up: a type of butterfly "learned" to mimic the scent of ants, and to imitate the sound a queen makes, to get ants to raise — and give preferential treatment to! — its young. The mind boggles. How many billions of generations of butterflies died working on their impressions? How did they "learn" to exude a fragrance? Can you? How did they get in there and survive to hear the imperceptible sound a queen makes, much less work on their Rich Little groove? And, having "learned" all that, how did they communicate this acquired characteristic and learning to their offspring? All that's just for starters. Amazing. (I do think we have a better explanation [Psalm 104:24].)
  • As we wrap up, let's have a chuckle. My new son-in-law's mother actually did the wedding cake herself, and it was absolutely a marvel — and delicious, to boot. But this photo essay reminds us that not all professional jobs are so delightful. (Warning: the photos are very funny, but be warned that one does feature a terribly unfortunate misspelling of the word "luck.") After you wipe away the tears, you can see even more at the Cake Wrecks blog.
  • Gosh, I hate it when this happens. (Warning: disturbing image!)
  • And finally... the more Star Wars fans thought about Episodes 1-3, the madder they got. I mean — Jar-Jar Binks; expressionless kids; "Hold me, like you did by the lake on Naboo"; "Don't do this, Anakin! You're a good person!" Ultimately it was too much to take, and so....

In other news....

UPDATES
  • Oh dear. The story of Jesus' mother Mary told as "a female empowerment movie." Oh my. I suppose that is because the actual story is not all that interesting?
  • Hire this kid.
  • Snopes should do one on the urban legend that Democrats are, in any sense, protectors of Constitutional rights. Wrong!

I cannot believe you are dissin' evolution like that... Have you not observed it with your own eyes? We have been in the presence of Change personified and yet you doubt...

I mean just the other day the Obamasiah's moral compass swung from that of a facilitator of murder to lamenting the slaughter of the innocents (Tim Bayly has an excellent comment). Just imagine what you will see tomorrow in our brave new world.

Who says Obama's not the Messiah? He can make it rain, can't he?

(Also, is it bad that the baby cake made me laugh to the point of tears?)

DJP said...

Al, that's a really good catch. Everyone should check it out.

Sam, I think if at least SOME of those cakes don't make a person laugh, he should check for a pulse.

The Bayly Brothers are very strong on the pro-life issue. I highly recommend them.

I also found the baby picture sooooo funny. I laughed out loud.

Well, among other things, I like "I want sprinkles"...

...written on a cake with those words, but no sprinkles.

I further imagine that person losing his/her job over it.

Then I imagine Obama hiring him/her to administer universal health care.

Awwwm..Dan'l is posting "naughty bits" with no loincloths on his blog. I'm tellin!

Seriously, the thing from Slate is very telling. Of course, the country should have known and what else should it expect after they handed two of the three branches of government to the left?

If this is really what America wants, it's going to get it. In spades.

DJP said...

Aigh! Sorry! Didn't even notice!

Fixed now.

LOL! The smileys are even funnier than the original!

Good H&T today. 'Specially the cakes.

Here is something that was linked to from Zach Neilson's blog that I think is H&T-worthy.

Am reading through Frazer's "The Golden Bough" and was struck by this today relative to politicians:
"Once a fool always a fool, and the greater the power in his hands the more disastrous is likely to be the use he makes of it."

ALWAYS declare your eggplant.

Love the Obama "money" picture. Is it original? I've love to use it.

DJP said...

No, it isn't. It's from HERE.

The orange "specialty cake"—with the, um, decoration on top (#15)—did it for me.

1. The cake wrecks really take the cake...they're AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

2. Who would've thought that Romulus and Remus the myth would become a modern-day political reality!? (Very clever....)

One Salient Oversight asked me to tell you that he's enrolled in a 12-step program called "Biblical Christianity Blog Anonymous." He's having trouble finding a sponsor, but has felt a lot of release saying "My name is OSO, and I'm a Biblical Christianity blog addict," and hearing the wave of friendly responses.

CR said...

Let me also congratulate Comrade OSO. I would certainly be willing volunteer to be his sponsor. I have to say, Dan, this is another happy day seeing blog addicts who can't stay away admit their addictions. The fact that he trusts you to admit this is promising. Excellent job Dan, and Comrade OSO - we'll be rooting for you.

DJP said...

Yes. Admitting you have a problem can be the first step towards healing.

Let's hope!

Stay away from California:

Aaron said...

I fled from CA nearly three years ago now when my wife became pregnant. It was evident to me then that the beautiful state was set for disaster. Between this, the impending bankruptcy and Gavin Newsome's expected run for governor, I'm pretty confident I made the right decision.

Mike Westfall said...

But where will you run?

There is One greater than Newsome who is now the Sock-Puppet-In-Chief of the whole country.

Aaron said...

Mesa Mike:

While I agree that all of the country is in danger, at least the danger is not as imminent and uncorrectable as it appears in CA. I've been through many earthquakes. The entire building may fall on you, but even if you can't get out of the building you do what you can to avoid the immediate danger of windows breaking, things falling on you, etc. Everything else has to be left to God. If you are in CA, you are in imminent danger.
