Eleanor Powell taps: impressive sequence

Reader David Achilles gave me a heads-up on a classic video, which is a bit reminiscent of Let the Beat Build. [NOTE: first link I had saved has now been removed; I've replaced it with one that is a bit lower-quality.]

Dig that continues take which comprises nearly the first minute and a half. What discipline, what art, what sheer athleticism. Amazing accomplishment. And all that in taps with heels. It reminds me again of how often I've thought that good tap-dancers were like drummers, except that they use feet and floors instead of sticks and skins.

Here's a little "behind-the-scenes" action.

Uh, Dan, is that first youtube image supposed to be a link?

I saw the second one by clicking on the link in the text below... very impressive! When I saw her spinning around repeatedly at the end, and then the guys throwing her end over end, and then more spinning... on top of all the dancing... well, that made me dizzy just to watch.

You've probably heard it before, but, "Just remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did - backwards and in heels."

Oh crud. It looked fine, until clicked on. "Removed by user," grr. I'll look for another.

Wow...that's wonderful to watch again!

Try this one too, Dan.

Watch closely from about 3:45 to the end...Buddy Rich bounces a stick off the floor and she catches it as they finish the number.

Makes me appreciate all the evenings I had to drive my little sister to dance lessons after 35 years.

Love that walking bass... popular with the smaller grasshoppers.

"Mom! What's that jumpy music?!"

You've heard of singing in the shower? I have one that dances in the shower. I'm sure I'll be hearing some thumping after showing them this clip!

Made me think of this clip from the show Time Warp (basically really slow-motion footage of cool things) about tap dancing.

And if you don't like that, here's a guy getting hit in the face with a water balloon, which might be more up your alley.

Loungurious - that was terrific! Thank you.

At the risk of sounding too solemn, Ginger Rogers didn't do everything Fred Astaire did, backwards or otherwise. When he danced with her, he included many extra steps for himself.

Rogers was extraordinarily versatile - a good dramatic actress, an expert comedienne (see "Stage Door"), and a very good dancer. As the latter, though, she was not in Astaire's league.

You were there.
