Hither and thither 3/19/10

Well, let's see how you all are at "subtle." Today marks the date, twenty-one years ago, on which this didn't happen:
  • And relatedly, my dear and only, precious, irreplaceable gift-from God wife sent me a number of good cartoons. Here's one we chuckled at:
  • Well well well. President The One says that he will not campaign for any Dem who doesn't vote for putting your healthcare under government control. Odd; he says that like it'd be a bad thing. Given the recent elections he's "helped," I would think this would make opposition well-nigh irresistible.
  • President The One's approval ratings continue to sink gently.
  • Will it surprise you to learn that he approves a plan to reward lawbreakers with citizenship? Of course not. Natural Dem constituency.
  • But that is just part of The Obama Way: reward those who threaten and harm us, alienate our friends. I remarked on this long ago. Take the president's approach to Israel as an example.Obama flatters our enemies, gaining nothing; and harshly attacks, condemns and criticizes our ally, Israel. It is increasingly alarming.
  • But then, Democrat administrations have often been "iffy" (at best) "friends" to Israel. Raising the bafflement of overwhelming American Jewish support for Democrats. I can seldom bear to listen long to Dennis Prager; too many first-person singular pronouns per second. But he shared once how, in his never-ending exploration of himself, he once "broke kosher," just to see if it was really his conviction. And he said that was far easier to do than was his first Republican vote — it's that ingrained among many Jewish voters, according to Prager.
  • One last and sober Obamanote. In a hard-hitting essay for the Washington Times, Jeffrey T. Kuhner says:
Mr. Obama is imposing a leftist revolution. Since coming to office, he has behaved without any constitutional restraints. The power of the federal government has exploded. He has de facto nationalized key sectors of American life - the big banks, financial institutions, the automakers, large tracts of energy-rich land from Montana to New Mexico. ...The most troubling aspect of the Obamacare debate, however, is ...the lengths to which the Democrats are willing to go to achieve their progressive, anti-capitalist agenda. ...Mr. Obama is willing to devour his presidency, his party's congressional majority and - most disturbing - our democratic institutional safeguards to enact it. He is a reckless ideologue who is willing to sacrifice the country's stability in pursuit of a socialist utopia. The Slaughter Solution is a poisoned chalice. By drinking from it, the Democrats would not only commit political suicide. They would guarantee that any bill signed by Mr. Obama is illegitimate, illegal and blatantly unconstitutional. It would be worse than a strategic blunder; it would be a crime - a moral crime against the American people and a direct abrogation of the Constitution and our very democracy. It would open Mr. Obama, as well as key congressional leaders such as Mrs. Pelosi, to impeachment. The Slaughter Solution would replace the rule of law with arbitrary one-party rule. It violates the entire basis of our constitutional government - meeting the threshold of "high crimes and misdemeanors." If it's enacted, Republicans should campaign for the November elections not only on repealing Obamacare, but on removing Mr. Obama and his gang of leftist thugs from office. It is time Americans drew a line in the sand. Mr. Obama crosses it at his peril.
  • Mm. Says here that women prefer metrosexual Johnny Depp types to masculine Sean Connery types. Something tells me my readers on the distaff side of the equation will want to weigh in on that one.
  • QED.
  • Logos is having its March madness, in case you want to participate. I've voted!
  • When political correctness goes absolutely nuts, you get things like this: official apology issued for offending a member of the Jedi religion, by asking him to lower his hood. No, I am not kidding. In fact, with some 390,000 members, it is the fourth-largest "belief" in Britain. What I don't understand is why he didn't just wave his hand and say, "The hood is no big deal, I can leave it up"?
  • Hulk... er, that is, Invisible Hulk smash?

  • Dang! Why can't Senator Tom "I Play Hardball" Coburn be my senator? I'm stuck with Boxer and Feinstein. Grr.
  • ...aaand now comes a trailer for Terminator...from Pixar.
  • DAOD points us to an article indicating (—by Science!) that faithful men tend to have a higher IQ (and vice-versa). Before you get too excited and put it in your church bulletin, you should note: (A) it's all about evolution; and both (B) conservatives and (C) religious people also test out with lower IQs.
  • Do IQ tests factor in Proverbs 1:7? I'm thinking no.
  • This week's Romans 1:22 Award goes to the very-deserving David Attenborough. Here we see Attenborough denying the nose on his own face. Count the "ifs" and "could haves," and note the teleological language. Can't stop the signal.
  • Courtesy of reader Justin Durst, Jr. — Death Star Melons!

  • Reader Pastor John sent me this. If I am hearing him right, Randy Alcorn believes in the resurrection of the body... of our pets.
  • Maybe not this one, though.
  • I don't know this is true; but I do suspect it.

  • For you who feel this blog is too cat-friendly (from this site - but be warned of bad language):

  • Then there's all this:

I generally enjoy H&T (which means I am about to say something negative) but might need to check some of the links, the one to the Jedi religion (ableit funny) has some rather inapproprate side-bar stuff (right there when trying to read the article).

Just FYI, and it may change or rotate out, I don't know.

Tom Chantry said...

Fred - Speaking as a non-pre-millenialist: I hate stuff like that.

1. Disagree with an opinion.

2. Find anyone anywhere who holds that opinion, and also holds some obviously nutty, non-biblical opinion.

3. Link the two together, and then say, "See!"

Honestly, is that the best we can do as Christian brothers? I've had dispensationalists do that to me because I'm amilenial. I've had Presbyterians do that to me because I'm Baptist. I've had Arminians do that to me because I'm Reformed. For that matter, I've had liberals do that to me because I'm evangelical, and I've heard of atheists doing it to anyone who's a Christian.

So when we argue this way, are we merely in the world, or are we demonstrating that we are really of it?

Happy Anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.

Replace the cats in the bed with a dog - under the covers - and you've got Mr. and Mrs. Rabbit.

This administration's loathing of Israel - now they're diverting promised weapons from Israel to Diego Garcia - is just appalling. Rep. Tom McClintock also spoke out about it in the House.

From the distaff side: Sean Connery. No question. Johnny Depp needs a long soak in hot water mixed with Clorox before I'd even take a second glance.

March Madness has been ruint for me - The One predicted the two teams from my home state, one of which is my alma mater, to do well and picked one of them to win it all. Great. We're hosed.

A man who remembers his anniversary. Seems there oughta be a medal in there somewhere... ;)

Oh - and on the Depp vs. Connery question: neither. Connery was always a bit too "feminine" and "cosmpolitan" for me too.

Eh, maybe it's the age difference but I prefer Depp. Although I like him a lot less than I used to. You know how it is with Hollywood types... the more they open their mouths, well.

I am no expert on Randy Alcorn but I have listened to "Heaven" (or some spinoff version) on audiobook. He was very hesitant to use the word resurrection in referring to pets. He was gently postulating that what if God decided to "reanimate" our pets, could God not do that? He based it on the Scripture, "Behold, I make all things new." But he was in no way dogmatic (BAHAHAHAHA!) about that.

DJP said...

Oh but my gosh, it's just so slushy. He loses focus and talks in these gauzy terms. I think part of it is "in Heaven," which isn't the way the Bible generally puts it. So that's why I think it more useful to say, "will be resurrected."

IOW, if someone asks, "Will my Mopsy be in Heaven," I would (tactfully) say, "So what you're asking is, 'Will God resurrect Mopsy with a glorified body to inhabit the Millennial Kingdom?'"

If so, on what grounds would a pet be resurrected? Pets of believers, like the infant baptism fiction of inherited spirituality? If not, then that should mean that ALL animals will be resurrected... and then yikes, that's a lot of animals!

DJP said...

BTW - "dogmatic."

Heh.

Happy wedded bliss celebration day to you & the missus, Dan. May there be many more and may your tribe increase.

And as a male, I have no opinion (that I will publicly share) reagrding the whole Depp/Connery thing. Besides, I'm still mourning this week's passing of Peter Graves...

And I have to stop reading H&Ts at work. The comics and pictures tend to make me snort obnoxiously and disturb my sleeping colleagues in the next cube.

Pet issue aside, I've certainly benefited from Randy Alcorn's writings. His emphasis on having an eternal perspective is an important reminder for the church.

Re: Johnny Depp, when the article says "women", do they really mean women who went all gooey over him in jr. high when he was all skinny and cheek-boney on 21 Jump Street in the early eighties and have never let that go? Now he's forty-something and lives permanently in France, where he has adopted all of France's most undearing habits, like not bathing. Nuff said.

I'm with Barbara on Connery too. Now Patrick Stewart, OTOH....

But Mike Rowe could pulverize them both with his voice alone...

I skimmed the Alcorn book just because I was impressed by its size - approximately ten times the size of the original letter he's supposedly commentating on. Not Bibley enough for me...

Barbara and Rachael,

What in the name of all that is good and beautiful are you ladies talking about Connery. You're both joking, right, you forgot to put the sarcasm remark, right? If not, Barbara, you're probably confusing Connery with Roger Moore. Connery was and is a man's man. Hands down.

Johnny Depp - yes, now that I think of it, he's metrosexual. Nothing wrong with that per se. Great actor? yes (but I have no plans to watch Alice in Wonderland).

Replace with a 15 lb. hunk of furry schnitzel and you've got our house! Happy Anniversary!

I'm stuck with Boxer and Feinstein.

I've got the John Boccieri, who is getting his 15 minutes of fame today for "flipping" on Obamacare. He tries to sell himself as a moderate, but votes with Pelosi across the board. I sure hope he got something for his vote, like one of the Manning brothers for the Browns or maybe Duane Wade for the Cavs.

Last night DS and I went to a debate for this district (hosted by a Christian group) and our favorite candidate asked the audience to raise their hands if they were fearful of the government's actions. Of course, most of the hands went up.

He said, "We've come to a horrible place when people are afraid of their government that is supposed to be 'of the people, by the people, and for the people.'" The room full of (mostly Christians) got eerily quiet for a moment. He put into words something we've all been feeling on some level but perhaps didn't articulate. The scope and enormity of that statement is stunning.

Mark Levin has already drafted a federal lawsuit, ready to file if/when this Obamacare scam passes. Read it here. It names Obama, Geitner, Holder, and Sebelius. It reveals exactly what's at stake:

The courts risk much in not acting in this case....After
all, if the House can pass a rule that “deems approved” one measure on adoption of a separate
measure and keep that maneuver from judicial scrutiny, then it, and its companion Chamber the
Senate, can do anything. There can be no doubt that the day after a ruling in this case that no
judicial review is permitted, the House and Senate would be free to adopt as procedures a lineitem
veto through use of multiple enrollments of unitary appropriations bills, deeming every item
in the bill as a separate bill.

In other words, say goodbye to the balance of powers that the founders so wisely wrote into our Constitution.

Returning late to this party...

Thank you, Rachel, and exactly.

One would be hard-pressed to confuse Sean Connery with Roger Moore. But a true "man's man" is by definition also a "ladies' man". And once you look past the show they put on, "ladies' men" are a frightening category in and of themselves (and I know a little something about this firsthand). Plus they just tend to be too - ah, shall we say - well-acquainted with the ways of the ladies. Very often they tend to be a bit "precious" themselves. I can't count the number of times I've remarked about some "ladies man" type of guy, "He's worse than any woman I know." Or how many bite marks I've put on my tongue as I refrained from offering them a Midol.

Pre-conversion, of course.

Barbara said...

Rejoining the party to agree with Rachael and Barbara. Can't you just see Connery sitting on a fine, Corinthian leather sofa, legs crossed, just so, silk scarf around his neck, sipping a brandy? Not exactly not my idea of a manly man!

Which of course brings to mind TOM JONES!! My mother used to SWOON over his swaying hips, tight pants and deep-V shirts that exposed his manly, hairy chest & gold chains. Back in the day, he was considered a manly man.

History has perhaps not been so kind to poor Tom. Our beloved Mark Steyn posted Delilah as his song of the week recently. Oy, yoy yoy! Besides the fact the song is about stalking and cold blooded murder, let's face it, Tom Jones was a GIRLY man!! Seriously...green sequins? (Warning: swaying hips, gyrating, and tight pants in this video!) My teen boys about died laughing at this one! How did we ever survive the 70's?

Look, I know you and I are pretty much of the same mind on this. We're not with the GOP because we're so taken with it. It's just that there are only two options, and the other one bitterly opposes every distinctly Christian value.

Aaron said...

Since this topic is moved clearly into the political realm, I'm having this particular disagreement with many who think abandoning the federal government for local control is the path to correction. They think the Federal government is merely some nebulous entity made up of an elite ruling class from which the local people had no say.

Unfortunately, many local governments are far, far worse. There are currently human rights commissions in certain cities that make it illegal to refuse your business service to homosexual couples (a great difficulty if you are a Christian wedding photographer). There are places where it is against the city code to hold public Bible studies at your home. The problem is not the government, but rather with the electorate. And more specifically, I blame Christians who have for far too long allowed people to sit in the pews, call themselves Christians, and yet vote for everything antithetical to Christianity.
