Monday music: "Smoke on the Water," as you've never heard it before

Until recently, Germany's defense minister has been one Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, a handsome 39-year-old aristocrat with a fondness for rock. However, scandal drove him out of office.

That, or he just buckled under the weight of his actual full name, which is: Karl Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg. I kid you not.

What music did Guttenberg request for his military send-off? That would be "Smoke on the Water." The band had two days to prepare, and did a pretty impressive job. Check it out.

On the song: here is an analysis with background, and here is the original:

Smoke on the Water?

He couldn't have been a Rush fan?

Or, more to the point, Chicago.

But meanwhile, what about the is?

Honestly,
I think our pep band played this song on Thursday night football games. Hearing it makes me nostalgic for 8th grade.

My dear wife's comment is that we weren't creative enough in naming our kids. Two have four names (i.e. two middle names), but... nothing like this.

I kept waiting for the goose-steppin' chorus-line to glide through, (à la Mel Brooks.)

Hey, I don't care what anyone says . . . I thought it was awesome.

But what's the deal? Did no one have rhythm back in 1973? The audience's clapping to the beat was horrendous.

I'll take "Songs you can play with mittens on" for $100, Alex.

I always kind of admired Rosebud as a middlename. ... but I'm dating myself.

The lack of rhytmic ability demonstrated by the crowd is most likely a function of the amount of "smoke" in their collective lungs...just sayin'

I had a co-worker once who played guitar in a bar band.

He got a request one day for the "Slow-walkin' Walter" song.

"Slow-walkin' Walter?"

"Yeah, you know: [singing] Slow walkin' Walter...and the fire engine guy!"

LOL

Did you know that there is a book full of such misheard lyrics?

That German guy got fired and smiled about it, I would too if I got that kind of send off.
