Talking to your kids... about Star Wars

Now this is silly.

And we have Pastor Al to thank for it.

I don't know if I'd call it "silly" but I laughed my head off and thoroughly enjoyed it...really. Star Wars ABC...still laughing. Ewok beanie...

May the force be with you - all of you - this fine day.

A bunch of us had a lengthy, detailed analytical discussion on the Star Wars saga yesterday (it was quite impassioned I might add). We are all pretty much in agreement than once that flannel wearing toy salesman dies, which could be in the next 10 years or so, the entire first three films should be flushed down the memory hole like JAWS 3-D and be totally remade.

Taking any idea of a "cool factor" away from Jar Jar Binks is a public service.

Bart Ehrman needs to write a book about the textual variants regarding who shot first.

As parents, we have decided to let our children begin watching on their 7th birthday with A New Hope and every 24 months introduce a new episode so that they can process the relational trajectories of the main characters with the amount of time it took us to process them.

We know this is a difficult task since SW finds its way into many homes. We ask other parents, when our children do sleepovers, to promise not to show any SW films that my children have not already been exposed to. After our explanation as to why, they give understanding nods, put their heads down and then usually comment: "I wish we'd done it that way."

All in all, it's helped our children to grow up with a healthy dose of reality about the intricacies of life.

My oldest, who is now 16 has seen 5 of the 6, just recently wrote me a note expressing his gratitude for the strategy we laid out. He wrote,"Although I begged and pleaded to know what was going to happen to frozen Han, your firm stand, and that Obi Wan hand movement made me realize that this was not the episode I was waiting for."

So, even thought he won't be able to speak with all his siblings about these things until he is 24, he has time to process the subtleties of the saga before speaking. He has promised not to give away plot details of this (unlike what he did to his younger siblings with Santa).

More could be said, but that video really spoke to me.
